Milan hosted the penultimate week of fashion month and it was nothing short of fierce and fabulous.
There were some exceptional shows that delivered statement collections and Instagram-worthy moments (like Gucci’s cyborg-inspired show, Dolce & Gabbana’s use of technology and of course, Prada’s historic opening moment). However, it was the key ensembles sent down the runway that made us want to plan our autumnal wardrobes for next season.
We’ve digested these trends in detail to help you get ahead next season. Here’s the trends we’re certain you’ll be seeing everywhere…
In theme
We’ve seen Alessandro Michele channel the maximalist aesthetic throughout almost every runway show he has prepared for Gucci but this season, other labels channelled the vibe, too. Infused with a gamut of colours, Moschino, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace used bright hues and a smattering of other effects to catch our eyes.
Whilst colour-blocking is a continuous theme we’ve see throughout several seasons, this year, MFW designers used the technique in a different way. The Alberta Ferretti and Fendi shows saw minimal colour-blockage with accessories or collars painted a different hue whilst Elisabetta Franchi and N°21 layered different colours together.
Floral print is also on trend — after all, a little flower power never hurt anybody. This year’s floral print was captured either muted, miniatured or plastered on a dark ensemble.
Lastly, sequins and metallics ruled supreme. Perfect for the F/W’18 season and leading up to holidays and end of year celebrations, you can never go wrong with a little bit of glitz and glam.

Pretty palettes
So far, 2018 has seen a slew of bright hues take over the runways (and dominate street style, too). During New York Fashion Week, fuschia pink, canary yellow and emerald green were the trending tones of the season but Milan opted for red, green and blue.
Already such a powerful colour, red came in the form of monochrome looks at the Dolce & Gabbana show, Roberto Cavalli, Antonio Marras, Salvatore Ferragamo and Moschino (which saw Kaia Gerber channel Jackie O in a full skirt suit).
Then came green. Whether diluted, saturated or neon, the green tone made its comeback on the runway following its run as Pantone’s Colour of the Year in 2017.
We also spotted the colour blue which came in all colours on the spectrum as seen at Sportmax, Trussardi, Marni and Versace‘s collection shows.

Powerful props
If there’s one thing that took over the headlines this week, it was the props used in some of the shows during Milan Fashion Week.
In order to focus attention on the brand’s upcoming accessories, Alessandro Michele sent real-looking snakes, dragons, chameleons and replicas of model’s heads down the runway whilst Tod’s decided to inject a dose of the cuteness and opted for puppies instead.
Also, Dolce & Gabbana’s use of drones carefully carrying the new “Devotion” quilted handbags was as clever as it was cool to watch!
