With just one day left in New York Fashion Week, the penultimate day saw the likes of Boss, Gabriela Hearst and Coach present their Fall/Winter 2018 collections. Here’s who we loved…
Gabriela Hearst
What you need to know: The NYC cool girl go-to label, Gabriela Hearst took her inspiration from 19th-century female coal miners and factory workers giving the collection a uniform, utilitarian-inspired feel. Her signature sportswear was given a slightly more formal update this season, but still retained its nonchalant, I-just-threw-this-on appeal.
What you might have missed: Guests were treated to a lunch whilst watching the show, a point of difference to being crammed on a front row. Plus, the hand-knitted scarves that made their way down the runway was made in Uruguay by a non-profit organisation that works with women in rural areas of the country.
Naeem Khan
What you need to know: High level glamour is the only way we can describe Naeem Khan’s Fall/Winter 2018 collection. Track suits were given a luxe update with embroidery, suits were crafted in sumptuous velvet and dresses were dripping in high-shine finishings. Bold colours — in particular ruby red, emerald and navy — dominated the colour palette, whilst prints added distinct drama to the already eyecatching pieces.
Wish list item: Any one of the track suits. Work-appropriate and oh-so comfortable.
Coach 1941
What you need to know: The fash pack went on a trip into the woods overnight thanks to Coach’s latest presentation. The brand’s Creative Director Stuart Vevers created an eery forest in the Basketball City venue quickly establishing a moody gothic-esque vibe for the forthcoming collection. The pieces that made their way down the runway were designed for the new Coach man and woman — oversized shearling jackets, printed dresses and fringed leather skirts nodded to the brand’s heritage but in an Instagram-ready, 21st century way. Plus, the shearling mules are certain to be a street style staple next season.
Celeb spotting: Vevers’ muse and regular campaign face Selena Gomez sat front row at the show debuting a cool new, waist-length ‘do.
BOSS
What you need to know: The Fall collection from Jason Wu for Hugo Boss was an exercise in minimalism. Sleek suiting sat alongside a wardrobe of everyday-ready separates in the form of trousers, coats and midi dresses. The colour palette was muted, navy dominated the pieces with hints of colour peaking through on piping and collars. Though there was a hint of maximalist flair via handbags and shoes adorned in an eyecatching zebra print.
Breaking news: Just before the show began last night, news broke that Jason Wu would be leaving the brand after five years. He denied that he was leaving to join another house, rather explaining that he was going to focus solely on his on eponymous line.
Calvin Klein
What you need to know: Easily one of the most throught-provoking shows of the week, Raf Simons took the fash pack to the American Stock Exchange to present his latest collection (and view on the state of America today). It was apocalyptic and dark with a distinct dystopian feel with models sashaying down the catwalk in balaclavas, construction site-inspired separates and heavy duty outerwear. On the flip side, there was also a slew of prairie skirts and perfectly pretty midi dresses, a nod to the barn and farm scene in which the show took place.
What you might have missed: The floor was entirely covered in popcorn. According to Fashionista, “it didn’t make a whole lot of sense until you realised the barns looked burned and the popcorn, just maybe, was meant to represent the burned-up corn fields. Yep, very dark.”
Now, see the shows everyone was talking about from day five.
