The 2019 BAFTA Awards are just over a month away and the first nominees have now been revealed...

On Sunday February 10, some of the biggest names in the British and international film industries will gather for the 2019 BAFTA Awards at the Royal Albert Hall in London. And over the weekend, the first nominees for this year’s awards were announced.

The EE Rising Star Award is given to an actor or actress “who has shown truly outstanding talent on the big screen in the past year and captured the attention of both the public and film industry”, according to the BAFTA website. This year, there are five nominees up for the prestigious gong, each of whom is a name to know in the coming 12 months.

Letitia Wright, Jessie Buckley, Cynthia Ervo, Barry Keoghan and Lakeith Stanfield were the lucky five chosen by an esteemed jury including Rosamund Pike and Richard Madden.

Wright, who was recently named as the highest-earning actor at the box office for 2018, is perhaps best known for her role in 2018’s breakout hit Black Panther (as well as Avengers: Infinity War  and Ready Player One), whilst Keoghan is known for his roles in Dunkirk and American Animals, Stanfield is recognised for his role in Sorry To Bother You, Buckley for her role as Moll in last year’s hit thriller Beast and Erivo for her roles in Bad Times, El Royale and Widows

The award will be determined by the public and voting is now open. Previous winners include Kristen Stewart, Tom Hardy and Daniel Kaluuya.
