Every year, the first Monday of May marks what has been dubbed “fashion’s biggest night out,” where the Who’s Who of Hollywood, international celebrities, media, and stylists gather on the iconic red carpet of the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Undoubtedly the most anticipated event on the fashion calendar, much of the hype around the Met Gala revolves around the theme and the interpretation thereof by those fortunate enough to secure the coveted invite. Speaking of the theme, it was recently revealed that the 2024 Met Gala will be titled ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.’
Taking place on May 6th, the 2024 Met Gala will celebrate the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, featuring approximately 250 rare items from its permanent collection. The 2024 Met Gala and ensuing exhibition will breathe new life into magnificent costumes and accessories from the museum’s archives, thus “reawakening the sleeping beauties.”
Steeped in history, the display will feature exquisite pieces like first-year Christian Dior and stunning Elsa Schiaparelli designs. Garments too delicate to be worn, like the 1877 Charles Frederick Worth ballgown, will be showcased using video animation, light projection, AI, CGI, and various sensory stimulation techniques.
The presentation will center around concepts of renewal and rejuvenation, employing nature as a metaphor to illustrate the transient nature of fashion. It will also explore the idea of rebirth, which, just like nature, is also at the heart of fashion.
