And so it returns: the ongoing topic of art and fashion, and how they go hand-in-hand in just about everything we put on. Breaking the norm of calligraphy just being an art form, Emirati designer Shatha Essa, made sure to execute the visual art form (which is only perceived as art flowing from pen to paper) in her forthcoming collection.
The UAE-based designer teamed up with the award-winning calligrapher Wissam Shawkat for her Eid collection, and to say the collection is anything but cultured and traditional, would be an understatement.
Speaking of the new collaborated collection, titled Art of the Pen, Shatha said: “It’s a very special collection as I wanted my designs to act as a canvas that blends two contrasting forms of art. Perfectly timed to be launched for Eid, through this collection I wanted to preserve a traditional practice that is key to our heritage and has withstood the test of time.”
In line with Shatha Essa’s ethos, Wissam adds a contemporary twist with Arabic letters — evoking timeless elegance and the perfect silhouettes for those endless iftar, suhoor and Eid invites.
And whilst staying true to the brand’s heritage and tradition, the touch of calligraphy gives a very cultured yet modern aesthetic to a selection of fluid capes and kaftans that are beautifully captured in soft pastel shades of pink and blue with pops of yellow and shades of green.
“Letter forms are timeless, and when calligraphic letters liberated from textual content, creates a very strong and powerful abstract visual language, that’s exactly what I wanted to achieve in this collaboration with Shatha Essa,” explained Wissam.
