New York Fashion Week is officially on, hosting the latest Fall/Winter ’18 shows by the industry’s leading names. Discover the collections below.
Self-Portrait
What you need to know: Designer Han Chong debuted his new autumnal collection during New York Fashion Week yesterday and the collection was seriously versatile. The designer opted for silky pieces in plaid-prints, soft leathers and touches of lace across dresses, pantsuits, skirts and blazers.
Key moment: With a colour palette that included jewel-toned hues — think bright orange, emerald green and cherry red — the collection boasted some seriously cool ’90s vibe with an overload of plaid prints, reminiscent of Cher Horowitz from Clueless.
Dion Lee
What you need to know: Australian designers are ruling New York Fashion Week this season, Dion Lee presented a note-worthy Fall/Winter ’18 collection. Synonymous with innovative designs and deconstructed silhouettes, the eponymous label delivered a collection that featured a utilitarian aesthetic with strong suits, bomber jackets and the brand’s signature netted fabric detailing.
Screenshot-worthy ensemble: Perfect for corporate-wear, that grey monochrome suit (pictured above, far left), is a chic new way to turn heads in the office. Mixing modesty with a little daringness, the slight cutouts are juxtaposed against a long sleeve blazer jacket and tailored cropped trousers.
Christian Siriano
What you need to know: Marking his 10th anniversary, Christian Siriano delivered a stunning runway show with 72 looks overnight. Probably one of the designer’s strongest shows yet, the collection was filled with red carpet-worthy dresses, sequinned silhouettes, voluminous skirts, cropped satin bustiers and patent leather detailing.
Celebrity line-up: Christian Siriano tapped a series of celebrities to walk the runway in his designs. Spotted in the brand’s eyecatching evening wear ensembles were Legally Blonde actress Selma Blair (who wore an embellished jumpsuit), Orange is the new Black favourite Danielle Brooks (who strutted in a teal green dress) and Revlon’s newest ambassador Ashley Graham who opened the show and appeared again in a sexy-meets-sophisticated red ensemble.
Jonathan Simkhai
What you need to know: Jonathan Simkhai’s collection was a blend between bohemian and historical references (hello suffragettes), with 36 looks sent down the runway. There were a lot of off-shoulder looks, fluffed ruffles on the sleeves, dresses with lingerie aesthetics, plaid-printed monochrome suits and a plethora of stripes.
Instagram-worthy ensemble: If you’ve got the perfect backdrop, any of Jonathan Simkhai’s pieces will perfectly up your ‘gram game. The off-shoulder, lightweight, burnt orange dress is perfect for the spring season.
Alexander Wang
What you need to know: The ‘Wang Gang’ came together once again for Alexander Wang‘s show. Hosted at Four Times Square, Condé Nast’s old headquarters, the cubicle walls served as the backdrop for the new season show. The models — including model-of-the-moment Kaia Gerber — were dressed in achingly cool pieces like metallic dresses, deconstructed LBD’s, soft sweaters and leather silhouettes.
In case you missed the details: Whilst the collection was on point, there was a selection of ’90s staple accessories that made a comeback on Wang’s catwalk. Like the hair claw clip that completed the models’ beauty looks — certain to be a sell-out when it hits shelves.
