From beachside beauties to mountain escapes and bustling hubs, the countries that topped Lonely Planet's must-see list for 2018 are in...

Every year, Lonely Planet releases its ‘Best in Travel’ series with a list of its top 10 destinations to travel to that year. The decisions are based on what the country has to offer visitors and this year’s top countries are an exciting and picturesque bunch.

Coming in at number one was Chile, who will celebrate 200 years of independence this year, which the site described as having “soaring Andes to the east, the vast Pacific Ocean to the west, the bone-dry Atacama Desert up north and the impenetrable winds of Patagonia down south.”

South Korea, who will host the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, came in second place and Portugal who has “seized the spotlight as a dynamic centre for art, culture and cuisine” rounded out the top three.
