Tech talk: Apple extends its Apple Watch family

The Apple Watch umbrella introduces the Series 6, Apple Watch SE and new experiences...

Apple just held its annual September event where the technology giant just revealed a line-up of its new gadgets and services, and perhaps its biggest launch yet is the expansion of the Apple Watch family.

The launch of Apple Watch Series 6 will see a delivery of breakthrough wellness and fitness capabilities such as a new revolutionary Blood Oxygen feature that offers users more insight into their overall wellness. Together with researchers from the University of California, Irvine, and Anthem, the collaboration will further explore how blood oxygen levels can be used in future health applications.

In terms of performance, the new Apple Watch Series 6 comes ready with many notable hardware improvements including a faster S6 System in Package (SiP) and next-generation always-on altimeter, along with its most colourful line-up yet. For the launch, the Apple Watch Series 6 will offer more choices than ever with new stunning cases and bands, including a new blue colour which will join the silver, space gray, and gold aluminum case options.

Another new option (one that we certainly have our eye on) is the (PRODUCT)RED Apple Watch, which will come with exclusive matching bright red bands.

And as if that weren’t enough to convince us to get our hands on the latest gadget, the Series 6 will come with watchOS 7 offering new experiences such as sleep tracking, automatic handwashing detection, new workout types, and the ability to curate and share watch faces, encouraging users to be more active and connected.

Apple Watch SE

Today, Tim Cook also announced the launch of a new watch that is embedded with design, function and value. The new Apple Watch SE packs essential features of the Apple Watch into a modern design that customers will love — all at a more affordable price. Apple Watch SE features the same accelerometer, gyroscope, and always-on altimeter as Apple Watch Series 6, and with the latest motion sensors and microphone, it offers health and safety capabilities including fall detection, Emergency SOS, international emergency calling, and the Noise app.

“Apple Watch SE combines elements of the Series 6 design with the most essential features of Apple Watch, all at a more affordable price,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. “We’re excited to offer another great option to help customers stay connected, be more active, and keep an eye on their health.”

Fitness+

Perhaps what we’re looking forward to most is the launch of Fitness+, a new experience that promotes wellness and fitness built for the Apple Watch. No matter the level you’re at, beginners ad committed exercisers will be able to access a personalised workout experience by world-class trainers, studio-style workouts and motivating music.

Arriving later this year, Apple Fitness+ intelligently incorporates metrics from Apple Watch for users to visualize right on their iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. During the session, the metrics from Apple Watch are shown on the screen and come to life for moments of inspiration.

The Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS) and Apple Watch SE is available to order today from apple.com and in the Apple Store app. The watch will also be available on September 18 in 29 countries and regions. Fitness+ will be available to Apple Watch customers as a subscription service before the end of 2020
