Apple celebrates World Emoji Day by adding even more diversity to our keyboards

Who knew we needed a falafel emoji?
Guess what? Those emojis we constantly use on an everyday basis (seriously, we can't stop), are about to get an upgrade...

These days, it’s quite challenging to send a message without using emojis. The characters have officially replaced the written word in messaging (well, for some of us), but can still get the message across clearly.

To celebrate World Emoji Day today, Apple has announced the release of over 50 new emojis that bring even more diversity to the keyboard.

Joining the ever-expanding emoji family are 59 new emojis that will roll out with a free software update for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, this fall.

From the food category, you can expect waffle, butter, garlic and falafel (yes!), and on the animal front, there’ll be a sloth, flamingo, skunk and orangutan.

What makes this drop of new emojis particularly special is that the updated keyboard supports diversity more than ever before with multiple skin colour options, and even more disability-friendly emojis, including a new guide dog, an ear with a hearing aid, wheelchairs, a prosthetic arm and a prosthetic leg.

The new emoji designs will be available this fall with the new software update.
