New York Fashion Week is officially over today and whilst there was a slew of coveted brands and designers that showcased their Spring/Summer ’19 collections, there was one collection in particular that stood out for us here at Buro HQ.
Straight from the Middle East to the Big Apple, All Things Mochi (a brand loved by A-listers all over the world, including Queen Rania) showed its S/S’19 collection to a crowd of fashion buyers and influencers.
Known for always referencing a different city or culture in its collections (the regional-based brand previously created tribal-meets-chic collections influenced by India, Thailand, Budapest, Palestine, Uzbekistan, Spain, African, Morocco and Mexico), All Things Mochi is now looking at the Ma’ohi ancestors of Polynesians.
Of the collection, the Dubai-based designer behind the label, Ayah Tabari, said: “The different artisanal practices I saw on my trip to the Polynesian islands were inspiring and really taught me about their community, they are so joyful and fun and love to be by the ocean. For this collection, we included tiare, which means flowers, to emphasise the strong bond between the Polynesians and nature. In addition, the embroidery includes tattoos, known as tatau in which each line drawn gives an essence of meaning and life to the body. Tie dye print is also incorporated to show the unique Tahitian technique of handmade artwork, created with colours that express the vibrant culture of Polynesia. We wanted to capture the authenticity of the culture so by developing these prints I believe we bought their beautiful traditions to life.”
