Overnight, Chanel announced that it will stop using exotic skins in its collections moving forward.
The monumental announcement was unexpected, but welcomed by many in the industry, particularly as the brand noted that “there is a problem of supply” in that finding skins that “match our ethical standards” was proving increasingly difficult.
An official statement from the brand said that it would “no longer use exotic skins in our future collections” which includes crocodile, snake, stingray and lizard. The brand’s President Bruno Pavlovsky also confirmed that it would cease using fur, though pointed out that the brand uses very little of this material. It said, “This is a decision which provides an opportunity to create a new generation of high-end products that respect our fundamentals: the exceptional creativity of our Creative Studio, our expertise, our standards of excellent, noble and innovative materials and exceptional finish.”
Pavlovsky also noted that the brand would now focus its research energies on “textiles and leathers generated by ‘agri-food’ industries” as per WWD.
It looks like 2018 is officially the year fashion and the environment became friends.
