Valentino’s ‘Of Grace and Light’ collection is a poetic take on fashion

Pierpaolo Piccioli worked his magic to heighten (quite literally) the couture experience...

The fashion industry continues to find alternative ways to showcase its latest RTW and Couture collections amid a global pandemic and to be honest, we believe designers are getting far more creative than they’ve ever been.

Take Valentino‘s Pierpaolo Piccioli — a creative that has well-earned a nomination for CFDA’s Global Women’s Designer of the Year award. The Creative Director has always aced the idea of proposing beauty and dreams to a reality and he took us to a whole other level (quite literally) for Haute Couture‘s Fall/Winter ’20 season.

Last night, Piccioli presented his latest creations at the Cinecittà Studios in Rome (in lieu of the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild in Paris where Valentino usually stages its runway shows during Haute Couture Fashion Week). For the collection, aptly titled ‘Of Grace and Light’, the Fall ’20 collection was a cinematic conversation between Piccioli and British photographer Nick Knight.

There was no runway however the creative duo took this outlook to new heights (literally) and instead, we saw models appear on the screen suspended from the ceiling or in rotating rises, dressed in larger than life fashion.

Whilst we expected the designer’s beloved voluminous gowns to make a comeback, the collection featured flowing skirts, exaggerated trains, sequined bodysuits and big shoulders, with a dose of feathers, frills and frocks.

Complete in an all-white colour palette (to capture the blank slate of this new beginning, the sense of infinite possibilities), Knight projected colourful graphics onto the garments throughout the film.
