Tommy Hilfiger has announced the launch of sustainable jeans for Spring...

Another day, another sustainable milestone. Fresh from the CFDA’s announcement that it has launched a sustainability initiative for designers, Tommy Hilfiger has revealed he will launch 100 per cent recycled cotton jeans for S/S ’19.

The jeans will feature in the Tommy Jeans collection, and are made with pre-consumer cotton scraps collected from cutting room floors and recycled “using a mechanical process that uses less water and chemicals, reduces waste and generates less carbon dioxide” according to Sourcing Journal. Plus, the sewing thread used is made from recycled plastic bottles, the buttons from unused stock from the brand’s previous seasons and tags from recycled paper meaning every element relating to the jeans is eco-friendly.

In a statement, Hilfiger said, “We have a responsibility to future generations to manufacture products in a more thoughtful way to protect our environment. Starting with how we design and produce some of our denim styles, we want to inspire consumers to make sustainable changes.”

The jeans were made in collaboration with PVH Denim Centre in Amsterdam, a leading facility in research and development for eco-friendly denim.

The first collection will include mum jeans, a trucker jacket and tapered jeans with the styles to be expanded in the coming seasons.
