The Fashion Trust Arabia was meant to take place in the Middle East in March but due to the current coronavirus pandemic, the star-studded gala cancelled its latest 2020 edition. Instead, it turned its awards online.
The judging committee came together to finalise 25 designers by meeting them via a series of Zoom conferences held last month. The committee including some of the industry’s finest names such as Christian Louboutin, Yoon Ambush, Diane von Furstenberg, Alber Elbaz, Elizabeth Salzman and Olivier Rousteing.
The five winners of Fashion Trust Arabia are Sudanese designer Omer Asim (ready-to-wear); Ammanii (jewellery); footwear designer Andrea Wazen (accessories); and Yousef Akbar (eveningwear), while the new Franca Sozzani Award for emerging talent was given to Zeid Hijazi.
The non-profit initiative supports design talent across the MENA region and is helmed by Fashion Trust founder and co-founder of Fashion Trust Arabia, Tania Fares. Each winner will receive a financial support, industry mentorship and the opportunity to sell their Spring 2021 collection on Matchesfashion.com.
