On Monday morning, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake (followed by multiple earthquakes) hit large areas in Turkey and Syria with surrounding countries including Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan feeling the quake. Whilst the race to find survivors is still ongoing, the death toll has risen to over 8,000 (from both countries) and is expected to climb with many still missing, and tens of thousands left injured and without shelter in the freezing winter weather.
We’ve listed some organisations on how we can help support the victims of this disaster on our Instagram page, but we need to do more. The fashion industry is responding to the tragedy too, and offering help where it can, starting off with our very own Dubai-based label, The Giving Movement.
Joining the efforts of the UAE – in cooperation with countries around the world – in providing aid to the earthquake, The Giving Movement will be sending 8,000 pieces of clothing to Turkey and Syria, in support of immediate relief efforts. These donations include essential clothing items for the thousands who have been displaced from their homes in the winter, including hoodies, jackets, sweatshirts, T-shirts, socks, windbreakers and much more. The package includes pieces of different sizes for women, men, children and babies.
“We believe in the power of togetherness, and in light of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, we are donating 8,000 pieces of clothing from TGM,” the brand announced via social media. It also invited brands Pangaia, Namshi and Nike to “join the movement and multiply our impact, together. Our promise is to the world, to help those in need and provide collective relief where we can.”
Whilst Pangaia, Namshi and Nike are yet to confirm, another fashion brand is doing their part.
Istanbul-based brand Les Benjamins will be donating their corporation donations for urgent needs.
“As Les Benjamins, we are deeply saddened by two heavy magnitude earthquakes that took place in Kahramanmaraş and affected Hatay, Adana, Osmaniye, Diyarbakır, Adıyaman, Malatya and Şanlıurfa. We act in cooperation with official institutions and NGO’s to heal the wounds together. We’re directing our corporate donation for urgent needs. We delivered our products from our Istanbul warehouse to the disaster areas through Kızılay.”
We stand with the people of Turkey and Syria during this difficult time and will do everything we can to help them recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and all those affected.
