Most wanted: Everybody’s wearing this sweater trend

Calling all cable girls!
Get the better of tricky trans-seasonal weather with A/W 2019’s must-have cable knit sweater…

As sweatha weatha comes a’knocking, there’s no better way to greet those cooler days ahead than with a big old cosy cable knit; warm, durable and intricate, it’ll go with just about everything, a real hero piece that will fit snuggly in any Autumn wardrobe.

Yes, this season has produced the most creative crop of knitwear we’ve seen in years, timeless silhouettes featuring a few little twists just to keep things interesting.

Kickstarting this trend was Jonathan Anderson, who provided the most exciting narrative with a A/W 2019 collection inspired by unforced and easy-to-understand modern clothing; a balancing act between practicality and artful flamboyance that gave us delicious cream roll-neck sweaters that beautifully morphed into handkerchief-fine dresses.

Meanwhile in Paris at Isabel Marant, turtlenecks were made to look sexy again, oozing Neo-bohemianism and an ’80s vibe (something Isabel does seamlessly), worn over rock-candy printed wrap skirts and thigh-high boots — real crowd-pleasers that’ll find a home amongst many of her hipster fans.

At Chloé, the classic argyle got spruced up with ribbed knit cuffs paired over equestrian tailoring to up the glamour quotient.

But it wasn’t just designers making the case for the cable knit as autumn’s must-have hero piece; the street style pack also championed the look, stepping out in head-turning fabrics and chunky ’80s-inspired silhouettes that will leave one longing for a cold, cold winter.

Instagram’s director of fashion partnerships, Eva Chen, gave a classic pair of denim trousers some sartorial edge with a striking oversized cobalt Christopher Kane crystal-embellished layered wool sweater, a small detail that will transform even the most understated of outfits.

Another street style star championing the hi-lo look was Erika Boldrin, who let a bright, burnt-orange turtleneck add a touch of drama to her effortlessly-cool daytime uniform.

For those though who want to up the ante after dark, opt for an over-sized style where you can just ditch the pants, and wear your cable knit as a dress. Just be sure to finish off the look with with clean-lined accessories — heeled winter boots and statement jewellery to help you waltz into after-hours mode.
