Late last year, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud announced that, as part of his Vision 2030 plan, women would once again be allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia. The announcement was (rightly) hailed as being a huge milestone for the conservative Kingdom, with men and women alike, both in the Middle East and beyond, rejoicing at the positive step forward.
And today, June 24, 2018, the decades-old ban has officially been lifted.
Women are now able to hold a license, be a Careem driver and operate trucks and motorcycles under the new laws.
The lifting of the ban is one of the significant changes to have been introduced in the Kingdom in recent months, with cinemas having reopened for the first time in 30 years and women being hired in positions at the Kingdom’s passport authority for the first time ever. Women have also recently been allowed to join the military.
