Here's who will be honoured at this year's event
The LACMA Art+Film Gala is one of the coolest events of the year. See who will be honoured at the 2018 ceremony...

This year’s LACMA (which stands for Los Angeles County Museum of Art) Art+Film Gala will take place later this year in California and the museum has just announced who will be honoured at this year’s ceremony.

Focusing on the works of those within the art and film industries, fine art photographer Catherine Opie and director Guillermo del Toro are the two chosen to be honoured in 2018. You’ll know del Toro from his most recent work, the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water (he also picked up the Best Director gong at this year’s ceremony for the film).

This year’s event — which is sponsored by Gucci — will be co-chaired by Eva Chow (a LACMA trustee) and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Speaking to WWD about this year’s honourees, Michael Govan, LACMA’s CEO, said, “Catherine Opie is one of the most important artists working today. Through her photographs, Cathy captures aspects of American culture, identity and politics that speak to audiences of all backgrounds. In Los Angeles, she is also recognised for her work as a teacher. In that role, she shares her knowledge and passion with future generations of artists who will continue her legacy of documentation. In 2016, audiences entered the vibrant world of Guillermo del Toro at his first solo retrospective at LACMA. As a filmmaker, Guillermo’s work challenges us to ignore traditional art-historical narratives and hierarchies of high and low culture. His ability to collapse time and space, history and fiction, and nature and fantasy makes him an exceptional filmmaker.”

The 2018 LACMA Art+Film Gala will take place on November 3, 2018, at the museum.
