Margaret Atwood penned her now-legendary novel The Handmaid’s Tale in 1985. Some 30 years later, it is eerily poignant and reflective of the political and social climate the world currently finds itself in. Hulu picked up the rights to the book in 2017, turning it into a multi-award-winning program with Elizabeth Moss as its lead. The show was so successful that showrunners added a second season (with a third on the way) although they took it in their own direction given that there was no sequel.
Well, now there will be with Penguin House confirming overnight that Atwood will pen a sequel to be released next year.
Called The Testaments, the book will pick up 15 years after where The Handmaid’s Tale left off. Speaking of the book, Atwood explained in a statement, “Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.”
The plot will involve three female characters from whose perspectives the story will be told. As for who those three are? We’ll have to wait until September 10, 2019 to find out.
