Can you share with us your journey as a fashion designer and how you became involved in creating iconic looks for artists like Lady Gaga?

I began collaborating with Lady Gaga over a decade ago. We first met during a photo shoot for V magazine and immediately discovered a creative connection. Since then, we’ve been partners in creativity, working together on all the amazing projects that have pushed the boundaries of fashion and pop culture.

What inspires your creative process when designing avant-garde and boundary-pushing fashion pieces?

My creative process is deeply collaborative. I thrive on exchanging ideas with the creatives  I work with, continually pushing boundaries and challenging conventional ideas. It’s about turning concepts on their head and having fun with fashion and art. Why settle for the ordinary when you can create something exciting and new?

As a mentor for AlUla Creates, what do you hope to impart to emerging fashion designers participating in the program?

In my role as a mentor for AlUla Creates, I aim to be more than just a guide; I want to partner with these designers to open up a broader world to them. It’s about helping them find their true selves and gain confidence in their unique voices and visions.

How do you approach the challenge of merging fashion design with film, especially when creating costumes that contribute to storytelling and character development?

Merging fashion design with film involves a deep understanding of both the narrative and the characters. My approach is to create costumes that don’t just fit the characters but also enhance the storytelling, adding layers of meaning and context that contribute to the film’s overall impact.

What advice do you have for aspiring designers looking to make a mark in the fashion industry and push creative boundaries?

My advice for aspiring designers is to immerse themselves in learning. Understand what’s out there, analyze trends from past to present, and then blend these insights to forge your own path. It’s about creating a unique perspective that stands out in the industry.

AlUla is rich in history and culture. How do you plan to incorporate or draw inspiration from AlUla’s heritage into the designs created through this partnership?

AlUla’s incredible history and culture are a huge inspiration. My approach involves appreciating these rich cultural elements and then modernizing them to connect with today’s audiences, creating designs that resonate with both the past and the present for the future!

Collaborating with artists and musicians has been a significant aspect of your career. How does working with filmmakers and costume designers in AlUla Creates compare, and what unique opportunities do you see in this partnership?

Working with filmmakers and costume designers in AlUla Creates has been similar in terms of creativity and strong visions. I approach this specific project like any other, offering a different canvas that allows us to delve into storytelling through film. This opens up new avenues for creative expression and impactful visual narratives.

Can you walk us through your process of collaborating with filmmakers and costume designers to ensure that the costumes enhance the visual storytelling of a film?

My collaboration process is focused on unlocking the creativity of the team and guiding them through the design process. We work closely to ensure that every costume detail aligns with the film’s vision and enhances the narrative, ensuring that each piece contributes to the storytelling in a meaningful way.
