If you’ve been on Instagram lately, you might’ve noticed that your feed is sharing more video content than usual. Whilst we all love the Reels feature, the platform has been pushing into short videos, a market that TikTok dominates on mobile, and users are not too happy about the change in format.
Plenty of users, celebrities included, have been vocal about the changes and urged the company to “make Instagram Instagram again,” implying it should focus more on pictures friends post. Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner have also expressed their criticism after noticing a change to the app by sharing an Instagram Story that read: “Make Instagram Instagram again. (Stop trying to be TikTok I just want to see cute photos of my friends.)”.
Now, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri is speaking out about the app’s latest update via a two-and-a-half-minute-long video on Twitter. In the video, Mosseri shared that he’s well aware of the changes to Instagram and whilst the app will continue to support photos, he believes it will become more video-focused over time since it is what people are liking, sharing and consuming on the platform.
“We’re going to continue to support photos — it’s a part of our heritage,” he said. “… I do believe that more and more of Instagram is going to become video over time… If you look at what people share on Instagram, that’s shifting more and more to videos over time.” Mosseri also confirmed that Instagram is “experimenting with a number of different changes to the app” and hearing “a lot of concerns” as a result.
Mosseri further tried to “clarify a few things”. Watch the video below…
