Despite averaging just 6.85 hours per night, residents of the United Arab Emirates are sleeping smarter, not longer. According to ŌURA’s latest “State of Sleep” report, UAE-based Oura Members rank among the world’s most efficient sleepers, achieving an impressive sleep efficiency score of 85.7%, the highest proportion of time in bed actually spent sleeping.

Dubbed a nation of night owls, the UAE tends to sleep later and wake later, with an average sleep window from 12:06 AM to 7:57 AM. This pattern aligns with residents’ natural circadian rhythms: 6.67% of the population are late-evening chronotypes, more than double the global average. Far from a detrimental habit, these schedules support better overall rest and health.
Sleep quality in the UAE outshines many countries with longer hours, including Finland, the US, and the UK. Even Japan, famous for short sleep, falls behind in efficiency, REM, and deep sleep metrics. Gender differences also emerge: women average 7.07 hours per night versus 6.59 for men, with stronger REM patterns and sleep consistency.

“UAE residents are prioritizing quality over quantity, tailoring their rest to natural rhythms,” says Doug Sweeny, ŌURA CMO. “Small, science-backed changes can make a big impact on health and recovery.”
