Hermès’ new home collection has taught us about materiality

We’ll have one of everything, thanks
During this year’s Salone del Mobile exhibition, Hermès presented a new home collection which cultivated creative conversation…

At this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan, Hermès put on quite the stirring show with its latest home collection. To be honest, they are always impressive and have, in recent years, become distinctly architectural under the Artistic Directorship of Charlotte Macaux Perelman and Alexis Fabry.

This year sees the French luxury house in a raw mood – honing in on the specifics of the material goods, creating a wider conversation about how we use and occupy things.

As far as the look of the exhibition goes – set in La Pelota – there was an interplay of shapes and colours, where the fabrics and wallpapers in the new collection were revealed in a variety of ways. Smoothed, pleated or pasted, they formed the backdrop for the rest of the collection.

The new objects, including lighting, textiles and home accessories, are presented in a diverse and luxurious range of materials. Here are a few of our favourite pieces.

The Tray-Tôt

Foldable, light, portable, multi-purpose, the tray holder will sit where you need it. Reminiscent of the house’s equestrian codes, the straps in bridle leather support a tray in natural oak with finger-joint assembly and handles enhanced with the maison’s iconic Clous de Selle.

The Tartan Dye

The hand-spun and hand-woven cashmere is folded and dipped in four dye baths to create this tartan pattern. The pigments infuse the diaphanous fibres to create an array of colours.

The Fruit Basket

The vernacular skill of basketry is combined with the simple lines of these wicker objects enhanced with handles in smooth bullcalf leather.

Take a look for yourself and don’t tell us this isn’t inspiring your next furniture haul…!
