How to wear November’s birthstones this month

Double trouble
The topaz and citrine jewels to add to your collection…

When it comes to birthstones, those born in November are blessed with not one, but two sunny gems to brighten up their winter.

The first is topaz, a calming gem often believed to give its wearer increased strength and intellect. Through much of history, most yellow gemstones were believed to be topaz and most topaz was considered to be yellow.

Today, the gem is actually available in a myriad of colours, from orange and red to peach and blue. The most famous topaz is a colourless 1680 carat stone known as the “Braganza Diamond” set in the Portuguese Crown Jewels, which originally was thought to be a diamond at first.

Citrine, November’s second birthstone — a vibrant quartz that comes in a variety of lemon-inspired shades — is said to be a gift from the sun, offering the ability to calm, heal, as well as encourage prosperity with it sunshine-infused hues. Popular throughout the Art Deco period, Hollywood stars such as Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford were often seen wearing big citrine jewellery.
