Starting today, Tiffany & Co. is beginning a new program that will allow consumers to know the provenance of the diamond they are purchasing from the American jewellery giant.
In an historic (and thoroughly important) move, the brand has announced that it will trace each of its individually registered diamonds (above 0.18 carats) with a unique serial number that will allow all geographical information about the stone to be obtained. In the long-term, the brand says it will expand this information to include details on how the stone was cut, polished and crafted.
Diamonds have long been a contentious item in the jewellery world thanks to the lack of information surrounding how they were mined – more specifically, whether child labour or illegal activity was involved. Tiffany & Co. has long been committed to providing its customers with the highest quality of diamonds from reputable mines and this new program is the latest step towards greater transparency.
