Exclusive: Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana on the brand’s new Gattopardo watches

A beautiful feat of watchmaking
At this year's Baselworld, Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana unveiled a new timepiece. Here, they speak exclusively to us about it...

There are two major watch fairs that take place each year: SIHH and Baselworld. Both unveil the year’s can’t-miss novelties from the world’s best watch brands, and at this year’s Basel, Dolce & Gabbana revealed a brand new timepiece that had everyone talking.

The Gattopardo builds on the brand’s DG7 watch family, and is distinguished by its intricate engraving. The technique is called ‘ornato’ and is only able to be done by master engravers thanks to the incredible precision it requires.

According to the brand, it takes over 20 days to complete the carvings on the case and clasp and that’s before work begins on personalising the rotor with the Dolce & Gabbana logo.

Speaking exclusively to Buro 24/7 Middle East contributor Farouk Chekoufi, Domenico Dolce said of the design, “Exploring the world of watches thoroughly was a challenge that has always fascinated us. To get into this world we had to study watchmaking for a long time but it was definitely worth it. Very beautiful and particular timepieces have been created, such as the Gattopardo for women and men, where the attention to the smallest details and the artistic work of engraving played a fundamental role.” Stefano Gabbana agreed, adding, “It was a great challenge, very exciting and interesting. The new Gattopardo is a real jewel for the wrist: the result of a long process of engraving, executed entirely by hand on the oscillating weight, the case, and strap closure. The dials are in mother-of-pearl and the straps in black and bordeaux alligator.”

The Gattopardo is available for men (in two options, with either a black or pink mother-of-pearl dial) and for women (in three models with either rubies, black diamonds or diamonds on a black or pink mother-of-pearl dial).
