5 TIMES WATCHES AND JEWELRY STOLE THE SHOW ONSCREEN THIS YEAR.

WRITTEN BY: NIKITA NAWAWI

Pop culture, particularly the world of cinema, has given us numerous iconic jewelry and watch moments. From Holly Golightly’s strands of pearls in Breakfast at Tiffany’s to James Bond’s Rolex Submariner in Dr. No, history has shown us that a well-crafted accessory has the power to transcend borders, finding life beyond the glass-guarded shelves. This year, many spectacular pieces have claimed their time in the spotlight. More than just product placement, they are seamlessly woven into the narrative, becoming an extension of the characters they adorn.

JAEGER-LECOULTRE IN MATERIALISTS

What better way to illustrate the economics of modern love than with something that’s widely regarded as a status symbol—a luxury timepiece? In Celine Song’s misunderstood masterpiece, Materialists, Pedro Pascal’s Harry Castillo dons Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso Tribute Chronograph as he attempts to win over Dakota Johnson’s Lucy Mason. Embodying the movie’s theme to perfection, the watch features two distinct dials: a sunray black watch face and an open-worked reverse that reveals the inner workings of the Manufacture Calibre 860.

CARTIER IN THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME

Wes Anderson serving visual in his films is by no means a surprise. Known for his penchant for symmetry and striking colour palettes, he brings the same energy to The Phoenician Scheme. But his latest directorial outing gleams with an added flourish: a bespoke jewellery piece by Cartier. Fitting perfectly into the old-money aesthetics of protagonist Zsa-zsa Korda, the white gold rosary dangling from his daughter Liesl’s hand is embellished with briolette, rose, and square-cut diamonds, as well as emerald beads and ruby cabochons.

IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN IN F1

No stranger to the world of motorsport—it has served as the Official Engineering Partner of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team since 2013—IWC Schaffhausen leads the star-studded ensemble of Joseph Kosinski-directed F1. Appearing as a sponsor of the fictional APX GP team, the marks of the Swiss watchmaker can be seen on the race cars, on the driver’s race suits, in the garage, and more. A number of characters also sport models from IWC’s Pilot collection, including the Big Pilot’s Watch 43 in stainless steel with a black dial.

TIFFANY & CO. IN FRANKENSTEIN

Bringing the lavish lifestyle of an upper-class family in the 1850s to the silver screen requires a deep understanding of the time period. Guillermo del Toro knows it well. Striving for historical accuracy in his latest film, Frankenstein, the director pairs Mia Goth with a co-star as old as the source material: Tiffany & Co. The gothic horror sees Elizabeth Lavenza, Victor Frankenstein’s love interest, decked in the brand’s rare archival creations, including select jewels originally crafted in that era. One of the standout pieces here is the Favrile Glass Scarab necklace.

OMEGA IN JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH

One does not simply venture into the unknown without a trusty timepiece. That is why Jonathan Bailey made sure to have his Omega Railmaster watch on him at all times in Jurassic World Rebirth. Designed with scientists, technicians, and those working around electrical fields in mind, it is the perfect companion for Bailey’s character, Dr. Henry Loomis. The watch’s stainless steel case, Co-Axial Master Chronometer movement, and anti-magnetic innovation may or may not be instrumental in guaranteeing the palaeontologist’s survival.
