#NYFW S/S’22 collections offer fashion as a vehicle of escapism

New York Fashion Week is officially back (yay) with designers ready to showcase what they’ve been cooking up during lockdown. For the Spring/Summer ’22 season, the schedule allows for a plethora of in-person shows, as well as digital releases, and whilst it’s the first fashion capital from the jam-packed Fashion Month calendar, there’s plenty to dissect.

Setting our expectations as to what to keep an eye out on from London, Milan and Paris, these are the fashion trends we’ve come across during NYFW….

Psychedelic prints

After finding ourselves working from home for months, the runways at New York Fashion Week showcased fashion pieces as a vehicle of escapism. Bringing into the creative spotlight some achingly cool trends, the collections creatively featured psychedelics as a source of inspiration – think fungi, swirls, intraterrestrial references and prints paying tribute to the ’60s and ’70s – giving us plenty of excuses to get playful with fashion.

Colour-coded

Fashion designers are making us feel hopeful by bringing bright hues to the runway. Pointing to a free-spirited optimism, designers opted for the the brighter colours of the spectrum with hues ranging from bright pinks, yellows, oranges and reds to blues and bold neutrals on dresses and separates. 

Suit up

Suits came in all shapes, colours and sizes during NYFW, giving us the option to suit up for a night out with the gals or to command attention in the boardroom. With a fresh take on suiting, it’s all about prioritising polished over comfort by merging innovative tailoring with traditional mandates to visualize a strong, yet bright future.

Radiating romance

Florals for Spring? Groundbreaking. To us, we saw designers embrace flora – the ultimate symbol of femininity – in their latest collections for Spring/Summer ’22 bringing joy to summer dresses. Whether it’s perennial prints, hibiscuses blooming or abstract motifs, the ubiquitous motif remains timeless.

Case of the cut-outs

OK, it looks like the curious case of the cut-out is here to stay. The unexpected slither of skin has been ruling the runway for several seasons now and it has become a prominent trend for Spring/Summer ’22. Seen on everything from slinky dresses to day dresses, it’s an unexpected twist on designs from Prabal Gurung, Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera and Gabriela Hearst – ensuring they didn’t look the least bit tacky.
