In fashion’s crowded landscape, few objects have earned the prestigious status like the Hermès ‘Birkin’ bag. Born from an in-flight conversation between Jane Birkin and Hermès’ then-chief executive, it became the symbol of understated luxury that could say everything without ever trying too hard. Now, one of Jane Birkin’s own handbags — a rare black ‘Birkin’ personally inscribed and lovingly worn by the woman who inspired it — is traveling to Abu Dhabi.
From December 2 to 5, Le Birkin Voyageur will be on view at the St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort as part of the inaugural Abu Dhabi Collectors’ Week, before going under the hammer in a live Sotheby’s auction on December 5. It’s estimated to earn a price tag between $240,000 to $440,000. Yet its value lies far beyond the market. This is not just another ‘Birkin.’ It is a tangible piece of Jane Birkin’s story, carrying within it decades of cultural resonance and personal history.

Gifted to Birkin by Hermès in 2003, this bag was her daily companion for four years. Made in classic black box leather and marked by time, it bears her handwritten notes and doodles inside its pockets. A signature “Jane B,” sketches of cherubic faces, and the tender inscription “Mon Birkin bag qui m’a accompagné dans le monde entier,” which translates to “My Birkin bag, my globetrotting companion.”
That single phrase gives the bag its name, ‘Le Birkin Voyageur’ as a nod to both her restless spirit and her human approach to luxury. Birkin famously used and scuffed her handbags without hesitation, subverting the idea of the pristine trophy object.
The upcoming auction follows July’s record-breaking sale of ‘Birkin’’s original prototype, which fetched $10.1 million at Sotheby’s Paris, making it the most valuable handbag ever sold. Abu Dhabi’s inclusion in this narrative signals more than a glamorous stop on the ‘Birkin’’s journey. The collaboration between Sotheby’s and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office brings the auction world’s elite into dialogue with the region’s growing network of patrons and tastemakers.
Its arrival in Abu Dhabi is a reflection on what makes an object legendary. The craftsmanship, yes, but also the life that shaped it. In Jane Birkin’s hands, the ‘Birkin’ became a diary. And now, as it prepares to cross continents once again, it carries not just her signature, but her spirit.
