Hussein Bazaza’s imaginary friend took over the creative direction of his SS2020 collection

Talk about pure imagination
Meet PORTU, Hussein Bazaza's imaginary friend responsible for his latest collection...

Hussein Bazaza has the creative tendency to transport us to a world where fashion is crafted from the finest fabrics, inspiration stems from imagination, and executions are a form of reality and fantasy.

For his latest collection for Spring/Summer ’20, the Beirut-based designer looked to his imaginary friend from school, PORTU, to take over the creative direction of his latest collection.

“Bazaza believes that she was always his creative mind and the reason behind his “creative rebellion” when he would sketch on all his exam papers, on every page of his books and every line of his scribbled notebooks,” according to statement released by the brand.

Bringing PORTU’s presence to life, Bazaza wanted to showcase what designer’s envision before crafting a collection and through this experiment, launched a transformative collection of ready-to-wear and couture pieces.

Continuing the brand’s structured and sophisticated aesthetic, the collection features fierce looks that come strongly contrasted with grungy silhouettes and delicate codes. The colour palette includes lilac, navy, nude, black, plum and orange.

This collection’s print was born from “the nerve cells and nervous tissues of the brain when thinking of reality versus creating imagination”, and comes adorned with flowers that been revamped for the season, complete with silver encrusted thorns added to their stems. Another technique used this season would be the hand embroidered burst of colours in the form of sketched scribbles on skirts and dresses referring to the designer’s creatively rebellious school days.
