How the world’s tiniest ‘It’ bag stole the show at the 2019 AMAs

Big things come in small packages
The best celebrity style at the 2019 American Music Awards : Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and more…

Ah, the American Music Awards, a breading ground for some of fashion’s most iconic looks. From Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s matchy-matchy denim-on-denim look to Destiny’s Child’s groovy body-hugging pink-and-white gowns and Whitney Houston’s 1986 “go big or go home” black and blue number, the AMAs have churned out some of the most historically memorable outfits in fashion history to date.

This year’s edition though, took a slightly more elevated route, where slinky and revealing was ditched for chic and sleek; over-the-top and outrageous took a back seat to elegant glamour; and where playful and more personal delivered equally unforgettable looks, just without the shock and awe factor of AMAs past.

Leading the bastion of the all-star line-up this year was Taylor Swift, who ditched her usual pastel-loving celestial image for drop dead glamour in an olive green Julien Macdonald dress complete with a thigh high slit and over-the-knee black boots; fitting for the star who made history that night as the performer with the most AMA career wins of all time, including 2019’s artist of the year.

Elsewhere, metallic shimmer from head to toe ruled the carpet with Ciara making the case for the sequinned pantsuit in a neon orange Georges Hobeika number that could literally be seen from a mile away. In a dazzling fairytale like Dior gown, Maya Hawke looked every inch the modern princess giving us a softer version of night-time sparkle, proving that there’s always more than one way to shine. But it was Sofia Carson, in a silver lame one-shoulder Francesco Scognamiglio sequinned gown, complete with ruffle across the neckline, that delivered the most dramatic of the show-stopping sparklers that night.

Of course, the AMAs is never without the playful risk-taker and Billie Eilish was there to deliver, channeling a touch of The Handmaid‘s Tale in head-to-toe Burberry check, complete with gothic crystal mask and heaps of Bulgari jewellery. The American singer-songwriter was only outshone by what could possibly be the world’s tiniest It bag ever, if you could see it, that is.Yes Tempo singer Lizzo took the micro bag trend to miniature extremes, pairing her one-shouldered Valentino dress with a white charm-sized Valentino purse bearing the label’s “V” logo. An accessory topping the list of memorable AMA looks? Now, we can say, we’ve seen it all!
