Earlier this year, CHANEL took us on a virtual trip to the Mediterranean as Virginie Viard presented 51 looks inspired by the Italian Riviera for Cruise 2020/21.
“Initially I had Capri in mind, where the show was supposed to take place, but didn’t happen in the end because of lockdown,” says Virginie Viard, “So we had to adapt; not only did we decide to use fabrics that we already had, but the collection, more generally, evolved towards a trip around the Mediterranean… The islands, the scent of the eucalyptus, the pink shades of the bougainvillea.”
The collection consisted of a free, laid-back allure inspired by the legendary actresses of the 1960s — think equal parts Sophia Loren, Dorothy Dandridge, Jeanne Moreau and Claudia Cardinale — and the looks emerged as a by-the-sea dream, symbolising what the actresses would wear while on holiday in the Italian and the French Riviera.
The collection, titled ‘Balade en Méditerranée’ (translating to a trip around the Mediterranean), is meant to be mixed and matched, and conceived to travel light with “a wardrobe that can be carried in a little suitcase on wheels, a shopper and an embroidered handbag”.
Made up of a slew of multipurpose items that can even be transformed such as long skirts converted to strapless dresses, long chiffon jackets that will easily take you from day-to-night and embroidered bandeau tops and jeans for nights in the Mediterranean. The collection is truly an aspiration for trips to come.
