More so now than ever, brands are opting to become more sustainable in their operations. From Coach’s decision to eliminate fur in forthcoming collections, Burberry’s move to stop destroying products and the creation of a sustainable capsule collection, these small changes are paving the way for a huge impact.
Now, a host of big name brands have come together to sign a new pledge that addresses the global plastic crisis.
Launched by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment seeks to eliminate plastic pollution across the globe through several initiatives and brands including Burberry, L’Oreal, Stella McCartney, H&M, Inditex, Unilever, Selfridges and Target (to name a few) have already announced their commitment to the initiative.
According to Fashionista, the brands are required to “publish their progress every year so that they can be held accountable for what they said they were going to do.”
Also, according to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, the organisation will target the plastic crisis in three major ways: “Eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging and move from single-use to reuse packaging models; innovate to ensure 100% of plastic packaging can be easily and safely reused, recycled, or composted by 2025; and circulate the plastic produced, by significantly increasing the amounts of plastics reused or recycled and made into new packaging or products.”
