Hold onto your IDs, because The Talented Mr. Ripley is getting a 21st century reboot as a TV series...

Here’s another series to add to your snowballing list of must-see TV. The Talented Mr. Ripley, the late ’90s classic, is being turned into a TV series.

Although the impending series is still unattached to a specific TV platform, there’s a lot of dark material happening in the world of TV – especially on Netflix (check out The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann and Dirty John) so a series about a con-artist sociopath is definitely not out of place right now.

According to Deadline, five novels by author Patricia Highsmith will be the inspiration for a new wave of Tom Ripley, including, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Ripley Under Ground, Ripley’s Game, The Boy Who Followed Ripley and Ripley Underwater. And further into the report, we’ve found out that Oscar-winning screenwriter Steve Zaillian (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Red Sparrow) will write and direct the new project.

There hasn’t been an official cast announcement (nor one in place yet) or a release date but fans of the 1999 film are blasting suggestions out on the Twittersphere. Some are suggesting Nicholas Hoult of About A Boy fame while others are saying Cole Sprouse would play a convincing young Ripley  – we totally see that happening.

But one thing is kind of obvious though…Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow won’t be appearing in it. The film is a masterpiece – let the actors be known for that and a new crop of talent take on the TV version, we say…
