Idris Elba and Taylor Swift are going to star in the film adaptation of the musical Cats

Feeling feline
Taylor Swift and Idris Elba are set to star in the film adaptation of the musical Cats. And its release is just round the corner...

Movie musicals are having a good run these days. We’re still obsessed with last year’s blockbuster release Mary Poppins Returns and of course, we still have Into The Woods, Chicago and Les Miserables on repeat.

And because pretty much every musical under the sun has been adapted for the silver screen, we weren’t surprised that Cats is the next in line to receive a touch of movie magic. The film will star Taylor Swift as Bombalurina and Idris Elba as the villainous Macavity and is set for a December 2019 release. Another reason for an unashamed festive countdown, then.

In case you’re not familiar with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s work, Cats is essentially about a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known a ‘the Jellicle choice’ and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. Check this video out if you need more of a visual.

As expected, the rest of the cast is just as starry. Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Ian McKellan, James Corden, Rebel Wilson and Jason Derulo have all signed up to bring out their best feline work. And we’ve even heard that Hudson, who will play Grizabella, has been watching videos of actual cats to learn how to move like one. Now that’s method acting…

And finally, the cast is in good hands with Director Tom Hooper taking on the project  he’s previously directed Les Miserables and The King’s Speech. Not to tempt fate or anything but anyone else think it’ll be a contender for the 2020 Oscars?

Now it’s a waiting game for the trailer…
