NATAS backs Bisan Owda’s documentary despite allegations and pressure to rescind nomination.

In a move that’s ignited passionate debate, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) has stood firm in its decision to nominate Palestinian journalist Bisan Owda for an Emmy, despite an open letter from the Creative Community for Peace—a pro-Israel nonprofit—urging the academy to rescind the nomination. The controversy centers around Owda’s gripping documentary, It’s Bisan from Gaza and I’m Still Alive, which chronicles her harrowing experiences during Israel’s relentless assault on Gaza.

At just 25 years old, Owda has become a powerful voice from one of the world’s most volatile regions, sharing stories that are often buried in the rubble of conflict. Her work, produced by AJ+, a digital platform under Al Jazeera, has already earned her prestigious accolades, including a Peabody Award and an Edward R. Murrow Award. Yet, her nomination for an Emmy has been met with fierce opposition, not for the content of her reporting but for who she is and where she’s from.

The Creative Community for Peace, in their letter, accused Owda of being affiliated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). Owda has denied these allegations. Adam Sharp, president and CEO of NATAS, defended the nomination, emphasizing that it was vetted by two panels of experienced journalists who found no evidence to support the claims against her. Sharp acknowledged that past Emmy nominees have often been controversial but maintained that the academy’s commitment to showcasing diverse perspectives in journalism remains unwavering.

Al Jazeera has rallied behind Owda, denouncing the allegations as baseless and framing them as an attempt to stifle a critical Palestinian perspective. In a statement, they highlighted the significance of Owda’s work in bringing the harsh realities of Gaza’s civilians to a global audience.
