The Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice and Screen Actors Guild Awards have all been and gone, paving the way for the biggest night of the year in film: the Academy Awards.
This year will mark the award ceremony’s 90th anniversary and the nominees have just been announced. As expected, they follow a similar pattern to the previous ceremonies with a handful of the same titles vying for the top honours.
The Shape of Water leads the nominations with 13 nods (just one below the current record), followed by Dunkirk which received eight. Both movies are listed in the ‘Best Picture’ category along with seven other films including Gary Oldman’s Darkest Hour and the Greta Gerwig-directed Lady Bird starring Saoirse Ronan.
Frances McDormand is nominated for Best Actress for her part in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, the same role for which she won at both the Golden Globes and a Screen Actors Guild Awards this year already. Also in the category is Margot Robbie for I, Tonya, Meryl Streep for The Post, Saoirse Ronan for Lady Bird and Sally Hawkins for The Shape of Water.
Gary Oldman is nominated again for Best Actor for The Darkest Hour and is joined by Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread), Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq.), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) and James Franco (The Disaster Artist).
