This week, #BuroSpotlights Emirati artist Abdulla Lutfi.
This young Emirati artist is turning heads in the art world with his bold black-and-white drawings that capture the heart and humor of everyday life in the UAE. But Abdulla’s work isn’t limited to what you see; it’s about how you feel. From his studio in Dubai’s Al Fahidi district, Abdulla creates art that’s as much about cultural connection as it is about breaking boundaries, offering a fresh perspective that’s uniquely his own.
Abdulla’s signature black-and-white drawings are brimming with wit. His depictions of UAE skylines and everyday Emirati life exaggerate reality in the most delightful ways, adding a humorous twist to the ordinary. From high-rises to bustling souks, his works are alive with meticulous detail and sharp irony, all signed with his unmistakable “A.L.”
His art also reflects a deep connection to Japanese culture, a passion that has inspired entire collections dedicated to Japan’s pop culture, anime, and landscapes. Abdulla’s love for Japan is so profound that he’s preparing for an exhibition there, further cementing his role as a cultural bridge.
Starting December 12, Mestaria Gallery will host “LUFFY X LUTFI: EMIRATI MANGA,” an exhibition that perfectly encapsulates Abdulla’s talent for cultural fusion. Reimagining One Piece’s iconic protagonist, Luffy in a kandora, Abdulla creates a dialogue between Japanese manga and Emirati culture. Against Dubai’s iconic skyline, the characters take on a fresh narrative, blending Arabic and English in their dialogue and celebrating themes of courage and resilience. It’s a love letter to both anime and Abdulla’s Emirati roots, proving that art can unite worlds.
Abdulla’s journey as an autistic artist has been nothing short of groundbreaking. He channels his unique worldview into art that resonates with people across cultures. Through workshops, peer tutoring, and corporate demonstrations, he’s empowering others. Abdulla sees himself as an ambassador for “People of Determination,” using his platform to advocate for inclusion and spotlight the creative potential of the special needs community.
Despite his young age, Abdulla’s accomplishments speak volumes. His sold-out solo exhibitions, high-profile commissions (including work for Dubai International Airport), and a coloring book for the UAE Embassy in Washington D.C. are testaments to his artistic prowess. Whether it’s buildings, vehicles, or snapshots of daily life, Abdulla’s work is a celebration of detail, humor, and the world as he sees it.
In a city known for its glitz and glamour, Abdulla Lutfi’s art stands out by offering something rarer—authenticity. Through his bold lines and imaginative storytelling, Abdulla invites us all to see the world through his eyes, one brilliant black-and-white masterpiece at a time.
