As we commemorate Mother's Day, we delve into the timeless portrayal of motherhood in art across various epochs. Art, known for its intimate expression, finds its profound resonance when intertwined with the artist's personal narrative, particularly the journey of motherhood. Across centuries, these eight masterpieces eloquently convey the myriad emotions encapsulating the essence of maternal bonds.

“Self-portrait with her daughter, Julie” shows the artist with her daughter, o ering
a glimpse into her life as both a mother and a successful painter. The painting
reflects the roles and expectations for women during that time, showcasing
Vigée Le Brun’s talent as a female artist and her ability to manage both her
career and motherhood.

he Madonna of the Carnation is an oil painting by Leonardo da Vinci, It depicts
Mary holding a flower, with baby Jesus drawn to it.

Mother and Child by Picasso 1901.

Picasso’s 1901 masterpiece during his “Blue Period” shows a mother’s love in a
gloomy setting, painted mainly in blue. It’s a powerful image of love amidst
struggle.

Judy Chicago, a leading figure in the feminist art movement, explores female identity
through diverse mediums such as painting, sculpture, and installation. Much of her
work includes themes of creation as shown in her “Birth Project” series (1980–85)
focusing on the relationship between earth and the female body.

Miyakos series ‘Mothers’ contains 40 images of items left behind by her late mother.
For the exhibition, Miyako painted the gallery walls silver and cobalt, reminiscent of
her childhood home where she taught herself photography in the 1970s.

Elizabeth Catlett merged modern art with her political awareness as a Black
woman, crafting powerful works depicting Black identity through personal and
societal themes.

Walker’s paintings depict her mother, emphasizing the often overlooked and unpaid
domestic labor performed by women, which remains crucial for sustaining
numerous families. This work is part of a series titled after her mother, ‘Janet.’

Lisa and Janelle, known as LAS HERMANAS IGLESIAS, produce art rooted in
feminism, diversity, and collaboration. Growing up in Queens with Norwegian and
Dominican heritage, they often work alongside their mother, Bodhild, who enjoys
knitting, hence the dedication of this piece.
