What makes Chanel ‘N°5’ iconic isn’t just its unmistakable fragrance—it’s the way it revolutionized perfumery. When Coco Chanel introduced it in 1921, it became the first synthetic perfume. Formulated by perfumer Ernest Beaux, Chanel ‘N°5’ used aldehydes, a synthetic component that gave the fragrance a fresh, abstract quality, far removed from the simple, natural floral scents of the time. The result was a complex, modern, and long-lasting aroma. Housed in a sleek, minimalist bottle–that has evolved into a symbol of the Maison–the perfume embodied a new era of elegance and sophistication, solidifying its place as a cultural and fashion icon.
The legendary fragrance has cemented itself not only in history but also on the vanities of women the world over. In over a century of its existence, the iconic perfume’s campaigns have been fronted by supermodels and Hollywood royalty, each leaving an indelible mark on the brand’s legacy. From Catherine Deneuve’s elegant and mysterious charm, Gisele Bündchen‘s effortless glamour, and Nicole Kidman in Baz Luhrmann’s cinematic ad to the sultry edge of Carole Bouquet, these supermodels embodied the spirit of the ‘N°5’ fragrance.
Now, the newest face to star in the Chanel ‘N°5’ campaign is the French Maison’s longtime ambassador, Margot Robbie. Since becoming a Chanel ambassador in 2018, Robbie is now stepping into a new role as the face of the iconic Chanel ‘N°5’ perfume.
Speaking about the per, Robbie said “I think Chanel ‘N°5’ is one of the most iconic fragrances in the world. It’s incredible to be a part of it. There’s an incredible lineage of impressive women who’ve been associated with the fragrance over the years. I am very honored to be joining that long list of incredible talents.”
The actress’ debut campaign as the Chanel ‘N°5’ ambassador is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Luca Guadagnino and stars fellow Australian actor Jacob Elordi. The new Chanel ‘N°5 campaign plays with the idea of desire—how it pulls people together and apart. This campaign–which will launch in October 2024–like the perfume itself, celebrates the power of femininity, serenity, and the joy of finding contentment within oneself.
