Tiffany & Co. has announced the acquisition of a stunning 7,500-carat kunzite, an extraordinary gemstone that will anchor a special capsule collection celebrating the 60th anniversary of its iconic Bird on a Rock brooch.
Discovered over 25 years ago in Mozambique, the kunzite is notable for its exceptional size, clarity, and vivid lilac hue. Named after Dr. George Frederick Kunz, Tiffany’s first Chief Gemologist, the stone pays tribute to a legacy of gemological innovation that began in 1877 with the acquisition of the famed Tiffany Diamond.

This rare crystal will be transformed into 10 custom-cut gemstones by Tiffany’s master cutters, each featured in a one-of-a-kind Bird on a Rock brooch, a design introduced by Jean Schlumberger in 1965. Inspired by a cockatoo perched on a gem, the brooch has long symbolized Tiffany’s playful yet sophisticated aesthetic.
“This kunzite is a natural marvel,” said Victoria Wirth Reynolds, Tiffany’s Chief Gemologist. “It’s a fitting tribute to our heritage of exceptional gemstones and enduring craftsmanship.”
A select group of clients will even be invited to collaborate on their own bespoke brooch, further highlighting Tiffany’s commitment to artistry, legacy, and exclusivity.
