Princess Diana had many virtues, including inimitable charm and an innate sense of style that will forever live long in our memories.
Who can forget that iconic dress she famously wore to a state dinner at the White House, where she danced with Saturday Night Fever actor John Travolta. The Victor Edelstein blue velvet evening gown, which the princess paired with an oval sapphire-and-diamond centered pearl necklace, became one of her most recognisable looks across the globe, hailed by several media outlets as probably her most iconic.
Prior to her death in 1997, Diana auctioned off many of her dresses, including the Victor Edelstein gown, to raise funds for the Royal Marsden Hospital Cancer Fund and the AIDS Crisis Trust. Since then, the velvet dress has changed many hands but is being made available once again. Due to be held at Kerry Taylor Auctions in London on 9 December, midnight-blue velvet evening is going up for auction — with a pre-sale estimate of £350,000 (approximately Dhs1.6 million).
Falling alluringly off the shoulders and with a diagonally-swathed velvet skirt which hugs the figure tightly to the knee, the gown was a clear favourite of Diana’s, being worn for at least three further Royal engagements, including a state visit to Austria in 1986; a night at the Royal Opera House in 1991; and lastly, for her portrait creation by Lord Snowden in 1997.
