WE’LL BE EMBRACING THE ‘POLE POLE’—OR SLOWLY, SLOWLY—MENTALITY FOR A WHILE, INSPIRED BY RANA KHADRA’S ZANZIBAR TRIP.

After her adventures in Bali and Iraq, Jotun's color expert Rana Khadra now whisks us away to Zanzibar just in time for summer. This trip is your perfect excuse to hit pause and soak up the stunning beaches and vibrant culture of Zanzibar. It’s all about slowing down and indulging in some well-deserved relaxation—because, let’s face it, we all need a break, don’t we?

NAME 5 BEST PLACES YOU VISITED IN ZANZIBAR AND TELL US MORE ABOUT THEM.

Contrary to other destinations, I usually have a list, but Zanzibar is different. It’s best enjoyed list free and without the usual “must do’s”. For me the whole point of going to Zanzibar is to drop the list and live “pole pole” (slowly slowly My number one thing to do in Zanzibar is to go and spend time on a sandbank it’s basically an island that forms and disappears due to high and low tide. Chill on the beach all day, they are all so beautiful and talk to the locals. My favorite beach is up north in nungwi Venture into the villages and observe daily life and notice how humans don’t need much to be happy.

DID YOU ATTEND ANY CULTURAL CELEBRATION? HOW DID IT INSPIRE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM IT?

Yes actually, I crashed a wedding. (Video attached) it was wonderful and incredibly colourful and boy there was lots of dancing! I learnt to let my soul free, and allow the music to guide my body and to dance with every cell. And that there is no dedicated space for a dance floor, any floor is a dance floor. I learnt that the same freedom applies to colour choices.

AS A COLOR MARKETING EXPERT, DID YOUR TRIP TO ZANZIBAR LEAD TO ANY UNEXPECTED COLOR INSIGHTS OR REVELATIONS? WERE THERE MOMENTS WHEN YOU THOUGHT, ‘THIS IS A COLOR STORY WAITING TO BE TOLD’? CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT IT?

Definitely their use of print and colour together is like nothing I’ve seen elsewhere, print on print, a mix of strong dominant colours put together in a very unexpected way yet all together they make sense! Zanzibar and African culture in general has always inspired my colour selection as they are brave and expressive in their colour choices. Notice the kanga they wear and just how beautiful the contrasts are.

IN ZANZIBAR, DID YOU COME ACROSS ANY UNIQUE LOCAL COLOR INFLUENCES THAT SPARKED YOUR CREATIVITY AS A COLOR MARKETING MANAGER? ANY PARTICULAR SHADES OR COMBINATIONS THAT CAUGHT YOUR EYE?

Yes warmth is the theme in general, the sun is warmer, the sand is warmer, every colour is more hd and saturated and the people are warm, but so are the colours. Reds oranges and yellows. The colours of passion.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE DISH? PLEASE TELL US MORE ABOUT IT.

Seafood, fresh from the sea, bbq’d with a side of turquoise blue water and Mandazi a type of bread that’s a bit sweet and they have it for breakfast. Delicious.

NAME SOMETHING IN ZANZIBAR THAT CHANGED THE WAY YOU SEE LIFE.

From the moment you get to Zanzibar, you realize just how impatient you are, how fast you expect service to be and how frustrated you get when things are not at your pace. By the time you leave you are operating at a much calmer state of mind with patience and a hakuna matata attitude. I try and get myself to go back to that state of mind every now and then.

IF YOU WERE TO TITLE YOUR TRIP TO ZANZIBAR IN A FEW WORDS, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Pole pole : slowly slowly. It’s okay to do nothing, it’s okay to take a break, it’s okay to take your time, it’s not just okay it’s better!
