UNLOCKING THE SLIMMING SECRET: OZEMPIC FOR WEIGHT LOSS, YES OR NO?

Insiders with Registered Dietitian Leila Smaily.
'Ozempic, with the generic name semaglutide, gained approval as a diabetes medication in 2017. Beyond its primary purpose, it has garnered attention for its unintended yet beneficial "side effect" of weight loss, as substantiated by various research studies, prompting physicians to off-label prescribe it for obesity treatment. Off-label use denotes the prescription of a medication for a purpose other than its originally intended application', says Leila Smaily, registered dietician, specialized in food science and nutrition.

WHO’S A CANDIDATE?

According to Leila Smaily, when considering the use of Ozempic for weight loss, it’s important to note that it has become a popular choice not only for those with a BMI of 30 or greater but also for individuals with a BMI of at least 27 who have other weight-associated medical conditions like high blood pressure. However, it is being prescribed beyond these medical criteria, with a wide range of people, including celebrities, influencers, adults, and young individuals, seeking it to alter their body shape and size. This trend is raising concerns about its acceptability and potential harm.

HOW DOES IT WORK FOR WEIGHT LOSS?

The mechanism behind Ozempic’s weight loss effect involves several factors. It delays gastric emptying, making individuals feel fuller for longer periods between meals. Additionally, it mimics hormones associated with fullness, leading to reduced food intake. However, the drug’s adverse side effects, such as nausea, explosive diarrhea, and vomiting, can contribute to appetite suppression and weight loss.

WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS FOR USING OZEMPIC FOR WEIGHT LOSS?

Considering the pros and cons, Ozempic can lead to significant weight loss, but maintaining results requires continuous use. Notably, limited research exists on its impact on individuals with normal weight, and potential side effects from inappropriate use are unknown. Cons include cost, availability, and various side effects, ranging from mild gastrointestinal issues to more serious conditions like pancreatitis and medullary thyroid cancer. Pregnant and breastfeeding individuals should avoid it, and most people regain weight after discontinuing the drug.

WHEN ASKED IF SHE RECOMMENDS OZEMPIC FOR WEIGHT LOSS…

As for recommendations, Smaily does not personally advocate for Ozempic for weight loss unless the benefits clearly outweigh the risks in indicated patients. The drug’s long-term safety remains uncertain, and weight loss tends to plateau after one year on the medication. Education around food and diet is crucial, as the appetite-suppressive effects of Ozempic diminish once discontinued, leading to a return to previous eating habits and weight regain.

LOSING WEIGHT…THE RIGHT WAY.

Instead of focusing solely on weight loss, Leila the importance of healthy fat loss through sustainable lifestyle changes. Tips include maintaining a calorie deficit, incorporating an adequate amount of proteins, staying hydrated, avoiding processed foods and excess sugar, and engaging in regular physical activity. The overarching message is to lower expectations, embrace slow fat loss, and prioritize long-term, healthy habits.
