The shapka ushanka, the iconic Russian fur hat with ear flaps, has a deep-rooted history dating back to the 17th century. Originally designed to combat Russia’s unforgiving winters, it was worn by both soldiers and civilians, with its distinctive ear flaps (ushi in Russian) offering practical warmth. By the 20th century, it became a Soviet military staple, cementing its place as a symbol of Russian heritage and utilitarian style.

WHY IT’S TRENDING ON THE FW25 RUNWAYS:

For Fall/Winter 2025, designers are reinterpreting the ushanka in bold, unexpected ways. Spotted in exaggerated proportions, the hat has shed its purely functional past and transformed into a high-fashion statement. What makes it even more striking is the contrast: paired with ultra-modern tailoring, sleek eveningwear, and even delicate, sensual silhouettes.

This revival fits seamlessly into the contradiction dressing movement, where rugged, historical, or practical pieces are styled with refined or futuristic elements. It’s fashion’s favorite game—irony and nostalgia combined, creating a fresh new aesthetic.

And it’s not just on the runways. We spied with our little eye several moments where this iconic hat stole the show, but our favorite sighting? Emili Sindlev rocking it on the streets of Milan, proving the ushanka has already made the leap into street style.
