If you grew up in the Nineties, then you probably walked around in a pair of baggy trousers and a tiny crop top trying to look like Gwen Stefani — because come on, who didn’t!?
Yes, the Don‘t Speak singer’s sexy-tomboy aesthetic defined that era — up until the early Noughties — her fashion sense celebrated just as much as her music (both with No Doubt and throughout her solo career), inspiring trends instead of following them.
Twenty years on, her looks — a mixture of 80s punk and old Hollywood glamour — still resonate with many, a popular source of inspiration that is more than just a nostalgic throwback.
So it comes as no shock that when the 2019 People’s Choice Awards decided to give out a couple of icon awards at the 45th annual ceremony, they picked the Grammy-winning artist to receive their Fashion Icon award.
“It’s bizarre, it’s crazy,” said Gwen in a People’s Choice Awards video. “It makes me think back to Anaheim and looking through Vogue magazine and thinking, ‘Oh, those girls, that’s not real. I’ll never get my hands on those clothes.'”
She goes on to say that she was so “naive” to the fashion industry and was always just doing “my own thing.” The video also included a bunch of Gwen’s friends as well as fellow Voice coaches who congratulated and applauded the star on her award.
And it seems the 50-year-old singer was on a mission to remind us all that she’s still as much a fashion icon as she was back in the day, as she stepped out onto the red carpet this Sunday in Los Angeles to accept her PCA stopping traffic in a stunning white Vera Wang strapless gown, complete with oversized black bow and the words “Fashion Icon” printed in old-style lettering down the hem.
She completed the look with matching black gloves and fishnet tights which she paired with pointed-toe over-the-knee suede boots, leaving no doubt in anyone’s mind that the queen of style still reigns supreme!
