Dior taps female artists to reinvent limited edition Lady Dior handbags

The female force is strong
One of the maison's most iconic handbags is getting a makeover by an all-female artist lineup...

During the Spring/Summer ’18 season at maison Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri posed the question, “Why have there been no great women artists?”. It eventually led the Creative Director to release collections that were inspired by American artist Georgia O’Keeffe and sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle.

For the brand’s latest global design project (for which the brand taps several artists to reinvent the iconic Lady Dior handbag with limited edition designs), the Creative Director has asked an all-female cast of artists to re-create the bags.

Each of the 11 artists were handpicked by Maria herself and the list includes American artist Mickalene Thomas, painter and sculptor Polly Apfelbaum and Colombian artist Olga de Amaral.

They’ve added their own prints and fabrics to the limited edition designs, which stemmed from individual references, childhood memories and women they’ve known and admired.
