International Women’s Day (IWD) is just around the corner and there’s already plenty of plans in place to celebrate worldwide, from Diane von Furstenberg’s four-day extravaganza to the W Hotel’s What She Said series making its way to Dubai for the first time.
Seeing that as of June this year women in Saudi Arabia will be able to drive (not only cars, but also trucks and motorcycles), it’s a poignant year to celebrate women in the Kingdom. Saudi celebrated its first ever Women’s Day last year and is set to do so again this year in a very special way.
Al Arabiya reports that the Kingdom will hold a two-day opera called Daughters of Salman that will run from March 2-3. The cast of the operetta will be made up of female Saudi musicians and will also feature “theatrical performances, poetry by the most prominent female poets in the kingdom, and the presentation of a documentary film that tells the history of Saudi women.”
Sponsored by Princess Nora bint Mohammed al-Saoud, the event will take place at the King Fahd Cultural Centre in Riyadh. In addition to the main musical act and additional performances, there will also be a ceremony held to honour Saudi Arabian women making outstanding contributions in their respective fields.
This latest announcement is the most recent in a string of female-positive news coming out of the Kingdom under the rule of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
