We watch every Chanel Metiers D’Art Show with lust in our eyes and brewing holes in our wallets, but those that know also obsess from the neck up. The Chanel hair and makeup is always an event in itself. What thumb-stopping new hair ideas will Sam McKnight create this time? What game-changing Chanel makeup product will artist Lucia Pica make us demand for Christmas this year?
We’ve seen ‘Croissant’ chignons, brooch-accessories, elongated tube ponytails and simple Chanel ribbons that spawned approximately a million at-home iterations. For this years 2020 show, hair mega-stylist Sam McKnight created a few different designs ranging from ‘boyish’ to ‘cool girl’.
The Camellia flower formed the centre of the accessories story. Sam is especially proficient at making his own pieces, which both means that we can’t buy them ourselves (damn), but we can DIY them (um, we can always try). The classic brooches and fine netting sat on gently tousled half-up do’s, but the hero of d’show was the ‘Wet-twist’; a distinct 1980s aesthetic that is a clear nod to Coco herself (the show was staged in a recreation of her apartment after all). Makeup artist Lucia Pica created fresh but sophisticated faces highlighting a different part of the face in each. ‘I took inspiration from the beautiful mirror stairs and the craftsmanship of Métiers d’Art,’ Lucia told BURO. ‘I really wanted to play with texture and materials’.
Some had pearlised accents in the inner corners or eyes and flashes on the brow bone, some had deep berry matte lips that has caused an immediate flurry of internet activity (in the BURO. office at least). What is this shade? Does it currently exist? Should I crack out my Chanel Rouge Noir and wear it with naked eyes. Well yes, yes you should. It’s a perfect festive look and if Virginie Viard and Lucia are saying it’s the thing, then so are we.

Products
Sam has previously used a concoction of products to create the wet look.
“We use lots of Cock Grease Hair Pomade, L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni Art Full Volume Extra Mousse and Hair by Sam McKnight Modern Hairspray“
Mousse gives more of a structured finish. For the loose ends use a product like Redken L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni Art Glue or Redken Wax Blast.
Steps
1. Mix pomade with either of the above in your palm, rake through from roots to ends and follow with a comb to get the texture lines in place.
2. Take hair into a low ponytail and roll in one direction, gently tucking the mid lengths as you go.
3. Secure with pins and let the ends hang loose in a traditional pony
4. Finish with hairspray
