BULGARI’S TIMELESS CHARM UNVEILED: BURO EXPLORES ROME FOR THE LATEST IN MEN’S WATCHES.

HOW DOES BVLGARI, UNDER YOUR DIRECTION, ENSURE A SEAMLESS FUSION OF ROMAN HERITAGE, ITALIAN STYLE, AND EXCEPTIONAL WATCHMAKING IN EACH TIMEPIECE?

Firstly, let’s embrace the fact that we are a blend of cultures, akin to what the Greeks referred to as a Metic. As an Italian operating within Swiss territory, this fusion is something to cherish and celebrate. It’s an opportunity born out of traversing the globe and gaining invaluable insight into cultural disparities and their management – the successes, the challenges, and the failures.

Navigating these differences requires a nuanced approach, one centered on understanding, appreciation, and communication. Rather than dwelling on the negatives, we should focus on unlocking the potential inherent in diversity. This demands effective communication, active listening, patience, and above all, respect for each individual’s contribution.

In our watch division, every member is integral to our success, from the Swiss craftsmen to the Italian designers. It’s about recognizing and leveraging the strengths of both cultures rather than succumbing to conflict. Instead of highlighting stereotypes like Italian chaos or Swiss rigidity, we emphasize the positives while being mindful of the potential pitfalls.

Recently, during two intensive days with my executive committee in Switzerland, comprising individuals of French, Italian, and Swiss backgrounds, we delved into understanding each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We discovered that even the perceived “dark sides” can be assets when properly harnessed. It’s about recognizing the balance and appreciating the unique contributions each individual brings to the table, fostering an environment where collaboration thrives.

HOW DOES THE DESIGN PROCESS BALANCE THE TECHNICAL ASPECT OF WATCHMAKING WITH THE AESTHETIC ELEMENTS OF JEWELRY TO ACHIEVE THIS DUAL IDENTITY?

Bvlgari’s distinctiveness in the realm of watchmaking lies in our unique identity, epitomized by the notion of being a “Metic” – an Italian presence within the Swiss watchmaking landscape. This identity is an ongoing contemplation, a continuous exploration of who we are. After years of introspection, one of the distinguishing factors we’ve uncovered is our strong creative direction.

While other brands may have creative direction, ours is particularly influential in shaping the aesthetic aspect. Rooted in Italian design philosophy, which emphasizes not just aesthetics but the fundamental concept of beauty, our creative process starts with a deep consideration of what is “Bello” and “Ben fatto” – beautiful and well-made.

This philosophical approach to beauty harkens back to ancient times, where beauty was intricately linked with ideas of balance and justice. In Italian design, this translates into a meticulous balance between aesthetics and functionality. Unlike the traditional Swiss watchmaking approach where function typically dictates design, at Bvlgari, function and aesthetics coalesce from the outset.

In our creative studio, led by Fabrizio, the entire team is involved in the conception and development process, including the intricate design of movements. This collaborative approach ensures that aesthetic considerations are intertwined with technical aspects right from the start. Take, for instance, our perpetual calendar watch, where the unique display of time with retrograde date function challenges traditional Swiss logic.

This innovative design stems from close collaboration between designers, watchmakers, and engineers. Fabrizio’s expertise in integrating function into aesthetics results in ingenious solutions, such as optimizing display space to convey a wealth of information without compromising on elegance.

These collaborative moments between designers and technical experts are not merely sequential steps but the very foundation of our product development process. This integration of creativity and technical prowess is a hallmark of Bvlgari’s approach to watchmaking, setting us apart in the industry.

THE LEGENDARY RADIANCE OF GOLD IS HIGHLIGHTED IN THE DESCRIPTIONS. HOW DOES BVLGARI LEVERAGE GOLD AS A MATERIAL TO ENHANCE THE AESTHETIC APPEAL AND EMOTIONAL RESONANCE OF ITS WATCHES?

We hold a deep appreciation for light and color, often drawing inspiration from the luminosity of Rome. If you ever have the opportunity, I urge you to visit Lucia Silvestri’s studio on the 4th floor of the Longue Taveri. There, you’ll witness firsthand how she skillfully manipulates stones, utilizing natural light to unveil their true radiance. It’s a testament to the essential role light plays in showcasing the beauty of materials.

Consider the design I mentioned earlier, featuring a prominent date display with ends in the middle, a departure from the conventional. This design informs the creation of our calibers, reflecting our commitment to marrying aesthetics with functionality. Unlike larger companies where design and function may be distinct roles, in our tight-knit team, the head of the company drives both aspects, ensuring seamless integration.

Our approach isn’t a one-person endeavor; it’s a collective effort where every team member contributes equally. This synergy fosters constant interaction and collaboration, resulting in products that reflect the collective vision rather than individual contributions.

Returning to the topic of materials, our fascination extends beyond gold to encompass a diverse range, each possessing unique light-attracting properties. From steel to platinum to unconventional choices like aluminum, our exploration of materials is a continuous journey of discovery.

One notable concept is our carbon gold, patented by Bvlgari in 1994, which juxtaposes the matte structure of carbon with the luminosity of gold, creating a striking contrast. This interplay of materials is further accentuated by varying finishes, from polished to matte, satin to fine brush, enhancing the play of light and shadow.

This appreciation for light and materials is evident in our Lucia collection. Initially, we struggled to capture the essence of Lucia until we revisited the concept of light, a fundamental element in jewelry craftsmanship. This led to the incorporation of marquetry elements, symbolizing our dedication to harnessing the power of light in our designs.

As we continue to explore the interplay between design and materials, guided by the transformative power of light, our possibilities are boundless. Each watch is a testament to our unwavering commitment to innovation and creativity, with even more exciting developments on the horizon.

FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE, HOW DOES BVLGARI APPROACH THE DIFFERENTIATION AND MARKETING STRATEGIES FOR MEN’S TIMEPIECES COMPARED TO WOMEN’S TIMEPIECES?

We approach these categories separately because we deeply value the creative process of our designers. Each timepiece is imbued with intention and emotion, reflecting the artist’s engagement with the product. Our studio tends to lean towards projecting designs more tailored towards either the masculine or feminine market, recognizing the challenges in creating universally appealing watches due to variations in wrist size and personal taste.

We believe in crafting products with character that resonate with specific audiences rather than aiming for universal appeal. This approach allows us to offer diverse designs, ranging from robust and masculine to delicate and feminine, catering to different preferences. While this may seem complex, it doesn’t hinder our creativity or our ability to produce exceptional products in all categories.

From a business perspective, we prioritize economic targets while aligning our marketing strategies with the studio’s design projections. However, we also place significant importance on customer feedback, often adjusting our strategies to meet unexpected demands. For example, the desire for a smaller version of the Octo Finissimo from women prompted us to reconsider our design approach.

Our marketing team plays a crucial role in shaping our business strategies, providing insights into market demands and trends. They inspire the studio with valuable input, encouraging them to explore avenues that resonate with our target demographics. This collaborative approach ensures that our products remain innovative, adaptable, and relevant to our customers’ evolving needs and desires.

We recognize the importance of listening to customer feedback and are open to exploring new avenues, even if they deviate from our initial projections. This flexibility allows us to remain responsive to market demands and continuously innovate in our designs.

In summary, while our marketing team guides our business strategies, the studio retains a significant degree of creative freedom within a structured framework. This balance enables us to deliver products that are not only visually stunning but also commercially viable, reflecting our commitment to excellence in both design and business.
